REAL Insurance Company has raised the competitive bar in health insurance by launching an all inclusive corporate product designed for staff and dependants to manage their health proactively.
Real Health Insurance has introduced, REAL Health a product that comes in two options, The Standard Cover and Enhanced Cover. Both covers offer elective overseas treatment option.
Additionally, REAL Health has incorporated features that will help curb the recurrent fraud problem that faces the insurance industry in Kenya. This includes clinical staff members who vet every claim to identify unnecessary investigations or diagnosis from medical practitioners, and an incorporated SMS alert system through which members get a breakdown of what has been spent and procedures undertaken for verification. REAL Health members will also be educated on what the insurance cover entails as well as issued with insurance cards that have holograms to ensure that genuine cards cannot be replicated.
Real Insurance CEO, Joseph Kiuna asserts, “Our entry into health insurance is a logical extension of our product offering and we are confident we will raise the bar for health insurance in Kenya. Our innovative health product and wellness services focus on the customer. We believe that our success depends on providing access to high quality healthcare and are committed to helping people live longer, healthier and happier lives, and we aim to build lasting relationship with our customers in Kenya to become their healthcare partners for life.”
According to statistics from The World Bank, life expectancy at birth of Kenya’s total population in 2010 was 59.48 years, up from 56 years in 2009. However, there has been an increase of chronic non- communicable lifestyle diseases which are a major contributor to the burden of disease in Kenya. This has been attributed to demographic transitions and changing lifestyles of populations associated with urbanization. Chronic non communicable diseases are largely due to preventable and modifiable risk factors such as, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, tobacco use and inappropriate use of alcohol.
Kiuna observes, “a change in lifestyle has resulted in various long-term diseases culminating in high mortality rates attributable to stroke, heart attack, tobacco- and nutrition-induced cancers, obstructive lung diseases and many others. This has therefore created a medical insurance need and I would urge Kenyans to safe guard themselves against any eventualities as well as adopt healthy lifestyles”.
The Association of Kenya Insurance 2010 annual report indicates the medical insurance industry in Kenya recorded a Gross Written Premium of Kshs 7,433,967, a 26.27 % growth in 2010. This was up from Kshs 5, 887, 152 in 2009 whose growth was 25%.
